The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006, a federal statute, enhanced the punishments for some sex offenses and created a nationwide database of sex offenders. The law also has clauses that allow non-citizens who have committed specific sex offenses to be deported. Additionally, if someone was convicted of an AWA offense, then they can no longer petition someone else into the country, unless they meet a very rigid criteria.
